Product Review – Permeable Paving

Ecotrihex Permeable Paving - Honed Finish Charcoal 188 x 92 Pavers

Permeable pavement is one of those things that have been around for decades, but has really only begun to trend in the recent years.

What Is Permeable Pavement?

Permeable pavement allows rain or surface water to infiltrate through the pavement surface. Adbri’s range of permeable paving are developed so that when pavers are laid, there are small drainage voids in the pavement surface, which allow rainwater to pass through the pavement surface into the base below.

Why is it so important?

It has become increasingly important, because as more land is being developed and covered with hard surfaces like concrete that don’t absorb water, our stormwater and estuary systems undertake a lot of pressure to manage the high volumes of surface water run off. This can cause an increase in pollution in rivers, an increase in potential for downstream flooding and not to mention the wasting of precious water.

Permeable paving can be used in so many different applications. It was used extensively in the redevelopment of the Adelaide Oval – using Adbri Masonry’s Ecotrihex product in the Fig Tree Plaza, they ensured the deep-rooted trees were staying nourished and healthy as any rain water just filters directly back into the ground. There’s different ways to use the stormwater too, it can infiltrate through pavers and return naturally to the water table or you can harvest and recycle the water using tanks and pumps.

Is it as simple as laying pavers?

There’s a little more to permeable pavers than just the normal pave and lay routine. The correct base materials need to be utilised and installed in the correct way to ensure that water is draining properly through the pavers. It’s a bit more technical than your typical paving installation for a driveway.
